So what exactly does Tier 4 mean? There are 4 standardized tiers used to determine the level of service offered from a data center, ranging from basic Tier 1 data centers up to robust Tier 4. As you move up tiers, each one will include all of the features of its predecessor and then add some, which means that Tier 4 packs all of the punch of Tiers 1,2, 3, and more!
Tier 4 data centers maintain a minimum 99.995% availability guarantee, which means there is only 48 minutes of downtime per year! To ensure that the servers within the data center can stay up and running for such an extended time, the hard disks are hot-swappable (meaning that they can be replaced without turning off the server), there are redundant dual-power supplies to keep the server powered on even in the event of one power supply failure, and the power source itself is redundant in case one source fails. With a minimum of 2 processors in the servers you can also keep on running if a CPU fails. Aside from the the servers themselves boasting redundant features, the host facility environment is also fault-tolerant including the uplinks, storage, HVAC systems, and is also dual-powered. When it comes to redundancy and reliablity, Tier 4 is the way to go.
